Forward:

Daniel Smith travels to places of violent conflict and extreme poverty to document its effects with photography and writing.  His primary focus has been on Iraq and Haiti, and his photography exhibitions have the duel purpose of education about the places he goes, and fundraising for the people he meets there.  He has begun on this, his fifth trip to Iraq, to also bring medical equipment to clinics and hospitals in need.  Preferring to travel alone and without press crews or armed escorts, he would be best described as "roving" versus "embedded".  This approach is very important to him, and direct contact and trust in the people he meets is essential to his process.
